Fecal Microbiota Transplant, also known as stool transplant, gut biome reconstruction or "poop transplant", is the process of transferring fecal bacteria and other microbes from a healthy donor into another.
The use of antibiotics destroys the existing gut microbiome and thus, it needs to be reconstructed. Also, FMT has been shown in many studies to be effective for the treatment of illness due to unhealthy gut bacterium, such as c. diff. (clostridium difficile colitis), ulcers, IBS, Crohn's disease, other gastrointestinal diseases and even behavioral diagnoses such as Autism.
Although in it's early stages, research suggests that the type and health of the mother's gut microbiome plays a key role in the developmental and health of the fetus. Additionally, during delivery, the baby is coated in an additional external microbiome layer as it leaves the mother.
An incredible number of measures of health and intelligence have been shown to be connected to the health of one's microbiome, with more links being discovered almost daily. Moreover, it is becoming apparent that a health gut microbiome is integrally connected to lifespan, with FMT transplants showing significant life extension in animal models.
